inspired series:

These images were inspired by panoramic over lapping framed toy camera images. I found as I explored Las Vegas, Nevada I was able to depict my experience and understanding of this habitat through a controlled panoramic exploration. Cities are chaotic energetic places, by presenting the scape through the multi-image panoramic, life emerges from within the contained frame, revealing the energy found throughout the environment.

When visiting Ohio in the Summer of 2008, My friend Mike Owen shared his sketch books with me. After a look, I knew we should collaborate. He loved the idea and I photographed his drawings. I focused on architecture, furniture and a few images familiar to me from living in Ohio for most of my life. This is the start of the collaboration.

Transport:

The movement of humans, animals, machinery and even air and clouds is the basis of this work. You are looking at images of parking lots, landscape, skyscapes, cityscape, planes, trains, snakes and birds composited together into one canvas. Together these elements represent my daily observations. With these images I am interested in how the ground is not the ground yet is the ground. Playing with juxtaposition of ground and sky you are forced to deal with a familiar yet unfamiliar space. As the pieces get larger you are forced to move to explore the space, the ground becomes deceiving.

NeonPin

Neon signs, pinball games, old toys, Vegas

Pinball: as a kid, I played game after game, but then the video game revolution seeped into my existence, altering my gaming experience, soon replacing the physical beauty of the pinball machine with an electronic glow that drew us all in. Today we walk by an unplugged video game and there is no draw, but when we walk by a pinball game and drop that quarter, we are living the experience, the artistry, the bells, music, voices. Even when a pinball game is unplugged, it is a gorgeous piece of art.

Neon: like a pinball game, neon is a visual experience. Unlike the LED screens today that tell us a story in moving images, neon was the movement running across a building facade, creating a logo. When an LED is off, there is black; when neon is off, you still have the movement, the color from the subsurface - there is evidence of its glory days.

Toys: you find old toys everywhere. Every adult has a memory of that toy they played with as a youth (some of us even have those old toys in a closet or on a shelf). A glimpse of a toy takes us back to our carefree days.

Vegas: an embrace of the new, with a nostalgia for the old.

This series has become a generational document of nostalgia - graphic, colorful, and bold.

Flashforward or Flashback

They are people we once knew.
They are people we hope to know.

Theseimages are explorations—documentations of my everyday experiences. Fromthese mostly amorphous, fragmented glimpses of social interactions ourtemporal unconscious selects the moment. It’s the fluidity we recognizein an event, daily life or time passing that is illustrated in analmost painterly way. Unlike the artist painting a stroke across thecanvas, I use the camera to freeze a fraction of time in place and letthe motion of others recreate the dancing movements of interaction.

Inmy exploration of family, friends and acquaintances I began using adigital camera with long exposures, blowing out highlights and blurringthe people and surroundings. The exposures give the images a feeling ofwarmth, inviting you to spend time and explore the frame.

Withthese photographs I have recorded the past and future—memories andmemories in the making, your conscious and unconscious communications.

Peoplereveal themselves through their body language and how they interactwith others. Your interaction with these images may be my nextexploration.

Heather Protz

These Images were photographed between 1993-1995, in Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania and Florida. The Camera was a vintage Zeiss Ikon Nettar, it has a sticky shutter, this added to the overall look of the images, motion, vignetting, a yesteryear feel. All images were originally exhibited as silver gelatin prints, 5x5 - 8x8 inches.
